Hi again guys,

I am in the planning stages now to open a small clothing store in Cheboksary in about 14 months. Any ideas about the best areas to do so or the prices that one can expect to pay for an extended lease. I would want a store size that would allow for a nice variety but not huge like a department store, perhaps 80-150 square meters would suffice. Also, I would be interested to make some contacts in the area for customs purposes, legal advice, etc. Any interest or help would be appreciated :-) You can contact me through here or at my email timothy.bryan@yahoo.com.

Hi, I'm CJ. I would like to apologize in advance because the way I write is a little less than gregarious. I tend to be direct and at times impersonal, a characteristic I am trying to remedy. I am interested in talking to people who have traveled in the Chuvash Republic and becoming acquainted with people in Cheboksary so I can learn of the culture and eventually write and speak the language. I am a full-time college student and full-time employee at an assembly plant in South Dakota. I was contacted within the last month by a woman from Gremyachevo. We have been in contact everyday since Nov 7th. Initially we agreed to write as pen pals and quickly realized that there was a longing for something more serious. Since I am aware of various scams, I have been very careful about how to conduct our interactions. If the communications continue in the fashion they have been, I am anticipating making a trip to Russia. So before we decide to meet, I am doing some research. I am open to any advice regarding travel to Cheboksary then to Gremyachevo, and hotel or hospice accommodations, and other tips, suggestions or cautions.

How far is Gremyachevo from Cheboksary? What kind of town is Gremyachevo for a foreigner to travel to?

Whether or not the woman I met is genuine, I plan to make a trip to Russia in the next year. My great grandparents moved to the United States in 1910 from a small community called Schafer, a little east of Saratov. You could say I want to see were my family heritage originated. So any information regarding travel to and from the Volga River Valley would be greatly appreciated. Cheboksary seems to be a very nice, centrally located community from the places I am interested in visiting. Thanks!

I caught a book called "Moscow Underground." The cover is amazing, and when you turn it over you get only a reference to an underground Moscow Secret Society and the most bizzare weather conditions in the world at a popular train stop in Siberia. As written in a Russian English I could not find reference to the book online, but many copies in one location in Los Angeles. Spending most of my time reading Russian literature in Russian, I am finding this one to be the best and most difficult. The whole talk of the Aurorians of Siberia give it a deeper force of meaning when read Orally by Siberian Inuits and orther Arctic civilizations. There are perhaps as many cover to cover stories like these among the Gypsy/Bedouine Societies, transmitted ritualistically and performed in native tongues, sometimes written down in occultic languages, Russian especially the best thought out language in the world. Better than Soltzienitsin, or even Gorky, but even Gorky Park under the Moscow Night Sky, are not unlike the Moscow Underground. To Americans, Russia is viewed as the ultimate ski mission to the moon, and yet the final stomping ground for other spiritual giants that can only be experienced, such as revolution, other than as a scrap of Russian history. Like the plot of most other written Russian works, Moscow Underground is a plot that is moving so quickly yet unexpectedly that paying attention ot Tolstoy, The Bible, or even the Qoran is the only way to stay alive, and keep you freedom and insanity. The whole idea of firing a rocket over a frozen endless tundra covered of ice and snow seems like an irresistable excersize in flying and leaving the world even, better than the hopes of walking across Siberia as they claim Stalin had done, covering thousands of uncharted miles of frozen snow covered desert. Yuri Oleg describes Pavelskty Station as the best place in Russia to lose a large honey bee colony, especially if you expect the trains to run ontime, but the whole thought of pine trees getting pulled out of the ground and planted on upside down slopes in powerful vortexing storms seems yet impossible to believe, but even more interesting than all over flying or creepy crawling thing in the world.

Greetings! I've been "lurking" for awhile and decide to join in. First may i say "Thank you" this forum is very helpful. I will be visiting a friend in Cheboksary later in the year (first time) and doing some homework.

I'm also in the middle of a crash-course in Russian and will start soon with a teacher. I wish to share a site that has been helpful, it is voice interactive and covers different languages; [www.languageguide.org] this works pretty well and fish around if i've linked the wrong page.

Now for the questions;

> I've been cautioned before about domestic flights within Russia and curious about the Moscow - Cheboksary flight. Is this dependable, and how far in advance is reccomended to book? Does anyone know an approximate cost and contact info?

> Next, sorry if it's clueless... what type (brand) of computers are common here? For example if i plug an English keyboard into one is it likely to work? I have a portable laptop but hoping for another way.

> Are there other sites with more information that i'm not finding because they are in Russian?

Thanks in advance, the post with pictures and map on first page are great! (see for mad max)

Hi folks,

I am an American living in Maine, USA, and am seriously pondering moving to Russia down the road. My wife is from yoshkar-ola, but I am thinking there would be more in the way of employment opportunities as well as views of the lovely Volga if we settled into Cheboksary. Has anyone else here done this before? I am absolutely intrigued by the concept, and any information anyone has would be highly appreciated. I have a modest military pension (1500/month) and am educated, though my Russian is nonexistent right now. I appreciate your time in advance :-) I am also relatively young (38), so I want to find a career there that would be rewarding, perhaps teaching or the like :-)

Hi, check these pictures, looks amazing. Apparently its not far from Cheb. You can get there by bus (cool bus-station!), or by hydrofoil which sounds a lot more fun. I presume it belonged to the same Sheremetyev family who built the palace in St Petersburg? They were the biggest landowners in Russia if not the world. In the 1790's they had a million hectares, 200,000 serf families and an income in excess of $100,000pa. I wonder how much that is today? One them, Count Nikolai Petrovitch Sheremetyev caused a major scandal by marrying a beautiful (of course) serf girl called Praskovya Zhemchugova.

I can find nothing about this castle in English on line so if anybody has visited, please tell me more, I intend to go when I am next in that neighbourhood.

I'm going back to Yoshkar-Ola in a couple of week, but I will be arriving in Moscow too late to take the bus there. I don't have anything to do in Moscow and would like to just take a bus to chebo and then to Yoshkar-ola. Does anyone know when the last bus leaves izmailovski for cheboksary? I took it once but can't remember when it departed.
The average Russian is not invested in the stock market, but they do own an apartment or two. Once spending decreases, and credit tightens, real estate will fall into the abyss. The days ahead will not be pretty.

First, I want to state that as a general rule I dislike discussing politics and religion in a forum due to the explosive nature of these topics. That said, I came across something today that I must mention. I am sure everyone is following what is going on with Georgia. In order to get an accurate picture I go to numerous News websites from around the world. I was curious to see what the Russian News was reporting so I went to Pravda News. Now that is an Oxymoron Name for what I discovered if I ever heard one. A moments glance at Pravda's website and I knew that the Truth was no where to be found there. I had heard that Freedom of the press in Russia had vanished and had returned to the way it was under Communist rule, but to see it for oneself is quite an eye opener. At least the people of Russia have access to the internet so that truth is available to them.
As Russia faces diplomatic isolation over its military action against Georgia, I can only hope that the voice of the Russian people will be heard. No one wants a return to the Cold War!
